sketchy sketchy

Since I'm taking online courses right now, and I'm too easily distracted at home, I've been studying at Oliver's for the past couple weeks. Needless to say, I get distracted there too. I've discovered the best part about coffee shops though is that after 2-3 hours of sitting still you become part of the decor. Everyone forgets you're there and suddenly you're listening to a couple of teenagers pour their hearts out to each other, or you overhear an outwardly successful business man discuss his struggle with depression. It's oddly therapeutic to listen to. It's sort of like seeing the person behind the Facebook profile. They all become more human. It's lovely.

(The writing on the first page is from Ovid's metamorphoses: "Throned above them all, and leaning on his ivory scepter, Jove -- three times and then a fourth -- shook his dread locks and so perturbed the earth and seas and stars.")

the egg flip

My completed scene for the class film. I also put together all the puppets used in the puppet animation scenes of the film. But I feel the most accomplished about making the egg do a back flip.

procrastination

I was working in a computer lab and the class in session was doing a character concept workshop of a Victorian era vampire hunter so I was like "hey, that seems like a good thing to do to procrastinate" and here she is.
(yeah, she looks like an AC character. i get it, i know)

Practice, practice, practise

I'm trying to get faster at painting, so here's study of a still from the show Call the Midwife, done in about an hour. (view as a thumbnail, or be disappointed by it in full-size. you've been warned.)

Moon Ninja vs Sun Warrior?

But Hannah, you just did a painting of a topless man in nearly the same pose? Yup, I wasn't entirely happy with how he turned out(I have more difficulty drawing men). So I tried again, experimented with colours and, in the end, felt like I learned something.

Self portraits done at different times of the day with different light sources to try to study skin tone colours and values. The first was done in the morning with window light, and the second later in the afternoon with a lamp.
